The Conjuring is a 2013 horror film by James Wan with two sequels with the third one releasing in 2021.

After getting an early release in the summer instead of the fall due to anticipation, The Conjuring grossed over 319.5 Million dollars worldwide. It received great reviews from critics as well. The Conjuring received 86% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Conjuring received a Critics consensus as “Well-crafted and gleefully creepy, The Conjuring ratchets up dread through a series of effective old-school scares.”

So with all the positive opinions, I have heard I decided to check it out myself. What I can say is, I wasn’t disappointed

The film immediately sets up ideas and themes that would either be important or show up later in the film. From Ed and Lorraine Warren tackling the Annabelle Case. Or the Perron Families dog “Sadie” not coming in the house. Giving the audience the feeling something is wrong in a subtle way. That’s one of my favorite things about this movie. The subtlety.

I believe that horror movies can be too in your face about their premise. The way everything unfolds makes the story very interesting. Even when the movie starts to explain why everything was happening it wasn’t a bad thing. When everything explained it felt natural instead of feeling forced.

Then there are the characters. Even though there is nothing too crazy going on there’s nothing bad either. The Perron family are regular people. But that can still be a positive. The Perron family acts and reacts as regular people. Most of the conflicts in the movie were unavoidable. The only thing you can point to them as being their fault was moving into the house.

I also believe that Lorraine and Ed Warren are interesting characters themselves. I hope that in the later movies we get to know more about them.

The only sort of criticism I have for the film is the introduction to the Perron Family got kind of boring and repetitive. From a birds-eye view, I felt like I knew what was going to happen at first. If everything kept a more ambiguous tone I would’ve enjoyed that bit of the movie more.

But all in all, I enjoyed the movie. It had a very enjoyable plot with decent characters to support it. The effects were pretty good and everything blended very well. If I was to give this movie a score I would give it an 8/10 and if you haven’t watched it I’d say go for it.
